Marko Kaiser has announced the release of linuX-gamers Live 0.9.6, an Arch-based live CD/DVD/USB image containing a large collection of popular Linux games. New features: host system in local network. New games: Osmos demo, LinCityNG, OpenTTD.

Features The current version is a developement release, version 0.9.6. Features are:

* top free native Linux games!
* most of the games have a multiplayer mode!
* high performance video card drivers
o proprietary NVIDIA drivers for GeForce2 MX and better (up to GeForce GTX 4xx included)
o proprietary ATI driver for Radeon HD 2400 and better (up to Radeon HD 58xx included)
* open source drivers with 3D acceleration for many other video cards
* harddisk is not touched!
* nothing needs to be configured, everything is done automatically
* networking is configured using dhcp server (network manager included)
* LAN hosting makes it possible for other clients in your LAN to boot from the network!
* hybrid ISO enables you to either burn the image to a disk or to write it to a USB device

Hardware requirements Your PC must at least meet these requirements:

* i686-capable architecture
* 512 MB ram
* videocard with 3d acceleration

Note: If the computer you try live.linuX-gamers out on is older than 6 years, you should try the Lite version as it contains mostly games suited for older computers.

Bugs Known issues of the current releasee:

* some games go out-of-range for some screens
* one some sound cards, sound may fail or give static noise
* insufficient testing on ATI and Intel graphics cards
* two games can be started at the same time, potentially causing performance problems

How to Solve the Problem of Blue Screen Error ( Beginning dump of physical memory )

A very hesitating error sometimes come up within the runtime of Windows XP.
It shows a Blue Screen dictating a Physical Memory Dump error.
By experience, I have an clue about it that it is either the problem of any hardware connected to the computer or the problem of Windows installed.

To resolve this problem, try the followings ::
Remove any external hardwares connected to the computer like Web Cam, Pen Drive, USB Card Reader etc.

If the hardwares like above are inbuilt as in the laptops then restart the computer, go to boot setup, and turn off these hardwares from there.

Save and restart the computer.

Observe if the windows is now running well or not.

If not, then you have to reinstall your windows.

Resize Image files with a right click menu

The Image Resizer Powertoy from Microsoft allows you to resize one or many image files with a right-click. You can download this Powertoy from Microsoft site. After installing, you'll see a Resize Pictures context-menu when you right-click an Image file. To select multiple image files, press CTRL key and select the next file(s)

Choose the appropriate dimension you want and click OK. The output file will be created in the same folder. If the original filename is Winter.jpg, the output file name would be Winter (Small).jpg

Task Manager Has Been Disabled, How to Fix It?

Many times when working on a computer that has been infected with a virus, trojan, or piece of spyware I find myself with the Task Manager being disabled. Malware creators like to disable Task Manager so it makes solving the problem and removing the issue difficult.

If this happens you'll normally have to edit the Windows registry to fix the problem. A restriction has been placed on the user to not allow them to run Task Manager, this might be ok in an office environment where the IT department wants to control things, but in a home office this can cause major problems trying to fix a malware or virus issue.

Listed below you will find the many ways to reenable Task Manager along with an automatic method that works wonders.

To open the Task Manager, you normally would do one of the following:

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL on the keyboard

(or)
Press CTRL-SHIFT-ESC on the keyboard

(or)
Right-click on a blank area on the start bar and choose Task Manager

(or)
Click on Start, Run and type TASKMGR in the run box and press Enter

Sometimes instead of Task Manager opening you'll see the following screen. In these cases, you'll have to follow the methods below to re-enable access to the Task Manager.

First we'll begin with the various registry modification methods for correcting this problem.

Method 1 : Using the Group Policy Editor in Windows XP Professional

Click Start, Run, type gpedit.msc and click OK.

Under User Configuration, Click on the plus (+) next to Administrative Templates

Click on the plus (+) next tSystem, then click on Ctrl+Alt+Delete Options

Find Remove Task Manager in the right-hand pane and double click on it

Choose the option "Not Configured" and click Ok.

Close the Group Policy Window

Method 2: Change the Task Manager Option through the Run line

Click on Start, Run and type the following command exactly and press Enter

Method 3: Change Task Manager through a Registry REG file

A Handy Guide to Using the Files You've Downloaded

Hey guys, here's some info about common files that you can download from the internet, and a little bit about using these files for their intended purposes. If you're stuck on what exactly a file is or how to open it maybe your answer lies ahead.

Compression Files

.rar .zip .ace .r01 .001

These extensions are quite common and mean that your file(s) are compressed into an "archive". This is just a way of making the files more compact and easier to download.

To open any of those archives listed above you can use WinRAR (Make sure you have the latest version) or PowerArchiver.

If those progams aren't working for you and you have a .zip file you can try WinZip, or 7-Zip.

If the two first mentioned programs aren't working for you and you have a .ace or .001 file you can try Winace (Trial version).

.cbr .cbz

These are usually comic books in an archive format. a .cbr file is actually the same thing as a .rar file and a .cbz file is the same as a .zip file. However, often when opening them with WinRAR or WinZip it will disorder your pages. To display these archives properly it's often best to use CDisplay.

Multimedia Files

Video

.avi .mpg .mpeg .divx .xvid .wmv .asf

These files are usually movies or TVshows, or a host of other types of media. They can be viewed using various media players including Windows Media Player, but I suggest using VLC Media Player. Some other great alternatives are: Zoomplayer, BSPlayer, or Media Player Classic. Also, you'll need to make sure you have the right codecs to play each individual file. Codecs are a tricky business sometimes so to help you out with your file and what exact codecs it needs try using GSpot. It tells you what codecs you need. Then just look on the net to find them.

The K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools. Codecs are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video. The user-friendly installation is fully customizable, which means that you can install only those components that you want.

There are three versions of the K-Lite Codec Pack: The Basic version, who fits on a single floppy disk, contains only the most essential codecs and related tools. The Standard version contains everything what is needed to play all the commonly used formats. The Full version contains even more codecs and also has encoding support.

Alternately you could download codecs individually, here's a few.

ffdshow (Recommended! (plays many formats: XviD, DivX, 3ivX, mpeg-4))

XviD codec

DivX codec

ac3filter (for AC3 soundtracks, aka "5.1")

Ogg Vorbis (for .OGM files)
.mov

These are QuickTime files. There are alternatives to the original program, if like me, you don't like it. Check out Quick Time Alternative or Media Player Classic which can play these files so long as you have the codec already installed.

.ra .rm .ram

These are RealPlayer files. I'm not a big fan of Realplayer. It installs lord knows what on your system and never really goes away when you want to uninstall it. Still if you insists you can get the player here. There are however alternatives to the original program, check out Real Alternative and Media Player Classic

vcd/svcd

These can be a pain on some peoples setups, but more so, on your stand-alone DVD player. Not all dvd players will play vcd/svcds, and some will play vcd but not svcd. There is a searchable database for dvd player compatibility here.

.vob .ifo .bup

Video_ts folder

Usually these files will come all together in one folder called video_ts. This is a direct backup of a dvd's file system. Use Nero to burn them onto a dvdr by selecting "dvd video" from the dvd menu.

Audio

.mp3 .mp2

Play them with WinAmp or your favorite audio player. Most new dvd players support the playing of mp3 cds. Making mp3 cds lets you put 100+ mp3 files on a cd for playing on your dvd player, computer, or portable mp3 cd player. However, they will not work on a regular cd player.

.ogm .ogg

Ogg Vorbis media files. You can find out more about them and download applications Here. This filetype is another encoding format that can be used for various media. Any new version of WinAmp will also do.

.ape .flac .shn

These are music files which have been compressed using lossless codecs. This means that all of the original sound and frequencies have been retained. Most audio codecs, including the mp3 format are lossy codecs which discard certain frequency ranges in favor of smaller file sizes. For the free lossless audio codec or flac see here. CD Image Files

.bin and .cue

These are your standard images of a CD, and are used quite alot these days. To open them you have a couple options.

You can burn them using Nero , FireBurner or Alcohol 120%, but this proves to be soooooooo problematic for a lot of people.

You can also use Daemon Tools, which lets you mount the image to a "virtual cd-rom", so basically it tricks your computer into thinking that you have another cd-rom and that you're putting a cd with your image file on it into this virtual cd-rom, it's great cuz you'll never make a bad cd again.

Alcohol 120% also sports a virtual cd-rom feature. Finally, if you're still struggling to access the files contained within any given image file you can use CDMage to extract the files and then burn them, or just access them from your hard drive.

You can also use VCDGear to extract the mpeg contents of a SVCD or VCD image file such as bin/cue.

.iso

Another type of image file that follows similar rules as .bin and .cue, only you extract or create them using WinISO or Isobuster Sometimes converting a problematic .bin and .cue file to an .iso can help you burn it to a cd. Examples of programs that burns iso's are: Nero, FireBurner and Easy CD Creator but there are many many more!

.ccd .img .sub

All these files go together and are in the CloneCD format. CloneCD is like most other CD-Burning programs, see the .bin and .cue section if you're having problems with these files.

.cdi

These are Discjuggler image files. Alcohol 120% is able burn these. Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120% can mount them.

.nrg

Another type of image file created with Nero. As far as I know these are not mountable, except maybe by Nero. These are also apparently only usable by the version of Nero that created them. I don't recommend using these, as I've had nothing but problems with them.

.mds .mdf

These are media descriptor files created with Alcohol 120%. They are mountable using either Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120%.

.bwt .bwi .bws

I haven't really encountered these much, but some people still use them. These are Blindwrite image files. Use Blindwrite or Alcohol 120% or mount with Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120%.

Other Files

.txt .doc

These are text files. .txt files can be opened with notepad or whatever your default text editor happens to be, and .doc are opened with Microsoft Word. Be careful when opening .doc files from unknown sources, they may contain macro viruses.

.nfoThese contain information about the file you just downloaded, and it's HIGHLY recommended that you read these! They will usually contain information regarding: the particular release group, the release date, the encoding method used (xvid, divx, vcd, svcd...) and format (ntsc/pal) for movie files; any cracks, keygens or cd-keys for applications and games; and various other pieces of important information. They are plain text files, often with ascii-art. You can open them with Notepad, Wordpad, Damn NFO Viewer or UltraEdit.

Unfortunately Windows uses this extension for it's system info program so simply double-clicking on the file probably wont work.

On Windows Xp
Right click on the .nfo file and select "properties"

click the button marked "change"

click "select the program from list"

click "ok"

select the program you would like to deal with this filetype

check the box next to "Always use the selected program to open this type of file"

click ok.

Now any time you double click on a .nfo file, it will open correctly.

.pdf

Adobe Portable Document Format

Like Microsoft Word documents these can contain text, pictures and formatting. Unlike Microsoft Word documents, they cannot contain viruses, and cannot be modified.

Opened with Adobe Acrobat Reader.

.jpg .gif .tga .psd .png

Basic image files. These files generally contain pictures, and can be opened with Adobe Photoshop or whatever your default image viewer is.

.sfv

Checks to make sure that your multi-volume archives are complete. This just lets you know if you've downloaded something complete or not. You probably will only need to use this file type if you are downloading off of newsgroups. Because most releases come from the newsgroups, these files tend to show up on file sharing networks. You can open/activate these files with SFVChecker (Trial version) or HKsfv for example.

These are parity files, and are often used when downloading from newsgroups. Parity files are usually posted along with the original files, with an index file at the beginning of a post and different sizes of volumes at the end of a post. How to get full screen for Turbo C++ 3.0 in Vista and 7

This is a big question for those who are still using Turbo C++ Version 3.0 in Windows Vista. As everyone knows that full screen is not supported with the version 3.0 in Vista; it is ridiculous to work in the small screen where I think no one can ever imagine writing a program there! This solution will help all the C, C++ learners using TC++ 3.0 in Vista.

This is a simple technique. Just follow the simple 4 steps given below and get a big screen in few seconds. There is no need of any additional softwares or drivers.
Step 1: Open TC++ (normally C:\TC\BIN\TC.EXE). In the startup it will show a dialogue box that it doesn’t support full screen mode as seen in the picture below. Just select ignore option. Then it will open the small screen mode.

Step 2: Go to the top left of the window and click. It will show a menu as shown in the figure. Then select properties from the menu.

Step 3: Now it will show the properties window, in which you select the Font tab. There you can see two font options as Raster and Lucida Console. The default will be Raster. You select Lucida Console and select the size from the size list as 28.

Step 4: After selecting the fonts, now you have to select the layout tab where you can see screen buffer size,window size, and window position options. First unselect the “Let system position window” option from window position options. Now make the following changes:

Screen Buffer Size: Width: 82 Height: 28

Window Size: Width: 80 Height: 26

Window Position: Left: -4 Top: -4

After making the changes select OK.

Now you will see a larger window and very crisp font size in which you can work perfectly fine. This technique actually doesn’t provide full screen in Vista but you will find it much better.

NB: The given sizes will work fine for 1280 by 800 screens, but there is no compulsion that you have to use them as specified. You can always use your own options according to your need.

Top 15 Ways to Extend Your Laptop’s Battery Life Laptops tend to lose their charm quickly when you’re constantly looking for the nearest power outlet to charge up. How do you keep your battery going for as long as possible? Here are 15 easy ways to do so.

1. Defrag regularly - The faster your hard drive does its work - less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery. Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly. (but not while it’s on battery of course!) Mac OSX is better built to handle fragmentation so it may not be very applicable for Apple systems.

2. Dim your screen - Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen. Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance. Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.

3. Cut down on programs running in the background. Itunes, Desktop Search, etc. All these add to the CPU load and cut down battery life. Shut down everything that isn’t crucial when you’re on battery.

4. Cut down external devices - USB devices (including your mouse) & WiFi drain down your laptop battery. Remove or shut them down when not in use. It goes without saying that charging other devices (like your iPod) with your laptop when on battery is a surefire way of quickly wiping out the charge on your laptop battery.

5. Add more RAM - This will allow you to process more with the memory your laptop has, rather than relying on virtual memory. Virtual memory results in hard drive use, and is much less power efficient. Note that adding more RAM will consume more energy, so this is most applicable if you do need to run memory intensive programs which actually require heavy usage of virtual memory.

6. Run off a hard drive rather than CD/DVD - As power consuming as hard drives are, CD and DVD drives are worse. Even having one in the drive can be power consuming. They spin, taking power, even when they?re not actively being used. Wherever possible, try to run on virtual drives using programs like Alcohol 120% rather than optical ones.

7. Keep the battery contacts clean: Clean your battery’s metal contacts every couple of months with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol. This keeps the transfer of power from your battery more efficient.

8. Take care of your battery - Exercise the Battery. Do not leave a charged battery dormant for long periods of time. Once charged, you should at least use the battery at least once every two to three weeks. Also, do not let a Li-On battery completely discharge. (Discharing is only for older batteries with memory effects)

9. Hibernate not standby - Although placing a laptop in standby mode saves some power and you can instantly resume where you left off, it doesn’t save anywhere as much power as the hibernate function does. Hibernating a PC will actually save your PC’s state as it is, and completely shut itself down.

10. Keep operating temperature down - Your laptop operates more efficiently when it’s cooler. Clean out your air vents with a cloth or keyboard cleaner, or refer to some extra tips by LapTopMag.com.

11. Set up and optimize your power options - Go to ‘Power Options’ in your windows control panel and set it up so that power usage is optimized (Select the ‘max battery’ for maximum effect).

12. Don’t multitask - Do one thing at a time when you’re on battery. Rather than working on a spreadsheet, letting your email client run in the background and listening to your latest set of MP3’s, set your mind to one thing only. If you don’t you’ll only drain out your batteries before anything gets completed! 13. Go easy on the PC demands - The more you demand from your PC. Passive activities like email and word processing consume much less power than gaming or playing a DVD. If you’ve got a single battery charge - pick your priorities wisely.

14. Get yourself a more efficient laptop - Laptops are getting more and more efficient in nature to the point where some manufacturers are talking about all day long batteries. Picking up a newer more efficient laptop to replace an aging one is usually a quick fix.

15. Prevent the Memory Effect - If you’re using a very old laptop, you’ll want to prevent the ‘memory effect’ - Keep the battery healthy by fully charging and then fully discharging it at least once every two to three weeks. Exceptions to the rule are Li-Ion batteries (which most laptops have) which do not suffer from the memory effect.

Bonus Tip #1: Turn off the autosave function. MS-Word’s and Excel’s autosave functions are great but because they keep saving regular intervals, they work your hard driver harder than it may have to. If you plan to do this, you may want to turn it back on as the battery runs low. While it saves battery life in the beginning, you will want to make sure your work is saved when your battery dies.

Bonus Tip #2: Lower the graphics use. You can do this by changing the screen resolution and shutting off fancy graphic drivers. Many people ask me in forums that “Am I Immune to BSODs, If I Use Vista?” Unluckily, no. A general thought is that blue screens do not even happen in Vista version, but not only are they still appear there, but we are here to make you sure we have observed them first hand. The big news is Microsoft done very much deep work into how Vista cope with major errors and other faults that in earlier OSs would make a system crash. BSOD problems in Vista **www.AmazingIT.blogspot.com** Many times, if a problem starts, Vista tries to fix it without any break. For instance, when a video-card crashes, a message appears “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered.” In Windows XP and earlier OSs, this thing happened in almost each system crash.blue_screen_of_death_vista

In many cases, Vista fails to recover on its own, and start showing a blue screen. By default, Vista reboots itself automatically after shortly flashing the blue screen. The process is so fast you perhaps miss to see it, but once Windows reloads, you will be seeing an error message same like shown above. You can try using the ‘Check for solution’ option; it is a same as you tries your hand while playing the lotto. Neither one results in anything. Rather, scroll down and write down the blue screen codes. Using this detail, you get able to do your own master work. I blogged about this topic as once one of my friend Rahul had a problem wherein the eject/close button of his CD/DVD drive stopped working so he had no option rather to push the cd tray every time to close it and for opening it , he used the eject option available on right click menu in Windows XP and Vista .

So, you accidentally deleted the message that you enjoyed the most or was a message from special someone and now you are feeling sorry, well time to be alittle techie and get back your message, we cannot restore it back into your sms inbox but yes you can atleast see it and copy it down somewhere.
Requirements: Fexplorer Symbian Device file manager software which you can download from here, After downloading it transfer it to your mobile and install it.
Now follow these steps,

Open Fexplorer in your mobile.
Select drive C: or D: depending on the memory in which the Sms messages have been saved.
For example you selected c:, Then open "system" folder.
Then in "system" folder open "mail" folder.
Then in this folder you will see different folders (eg 0010001_s) and certain files (eg 00100000). These files are the actual messages. Browse through every folder and open all files till you get the sms you are looking for.
For opening the files don’t choose options>file>open as it will show format not supported rather choose options>file>hex/text viewer. By selecting the "Hex/ text viewer" you’ll be able to open and read the deleted SMS message.
Hope this helped you and saved you from the unnecessary trouble.

Whenever we dial some customer care or enquiry number we are greeted with long and boring series of navigational commands “Press1 to do this, 2 to do that and more. .. “ , now if you are a regular caller that hurts but with some clever use of DTMF tones signals knowledge we can trick the IVRs machine and can quickly navigate to wherever we wish inside a menu .

Suppose You have to dial 131 for train enquiry which asks you further to press 2,3,1 to reach to the specific menu, then to automate this sequence 131 –> 2>3>1 we can use the (*) key on the mobile phone keypad to generate ‘p’ symbols (On Nokia sets repeatedly press * to get a ‘p’ symbol , while on Sony Ericsson keep the * key pressed to get a ‘p’ )

So now, just dial 131p2p3p1 for the above sequence of dialling 131 and then entering 2>3>1 to reach the menu without listening to all that gibberish .

Downloading MP3 or Video files is what most of us do on the internet, but it feels real bad when the audio or video file we downloaded for about an hour turns out to be bad, skippy or something else . Now that would sure make you hit your head hard on the wall, but wait here is a savior , You can use the Following methods to Listen to a Mp3 file while it is still downloading and view a video in a similar fashion. Please note that there are several players that support such incomplete files but the ones i would recommend are VLC and Winamp

If you are Using Opera, it’s really simple just start the download file as usual and from your Transfers tab, right click on file and Open With and choose VLC or Winamp
Firefox users have to go a step further, start the download and then right click on the file in downloads tab and click “open containing folder” and then there you will see a additional .part file of the same name as the one you are downloading , Just drag and drop it on VLC or Winamp .
Directly using VLC ( Just copy the audio , video Download link ) and open up VLC and go to Media->Open Network and paste the link in the address field and press the play button at bottom it will begin playing .
For torrents , just do this directly go to the folder where your file is being saved and drag and drop the file to VLC ( for a longer and better playback try to go to your torrent client settings and enable the option to download initial parts of the file first or give them preference at least )
IE and others go same way as Opera .

You can view the mp3 or video file this way and if you dont like the preview , just cancel the download

Yes, I too knew about this since long, but never thought of writing about it . BSNL provides a no registration required service named netone which can be accessed from any BSNL Landline , so if you visit some place and find a landline and your PC or Laptop has a modem port then you are lucky , follow these steps and get Internet access quick .

1. Connect the phone wire to your PC/ Laptop

2. Create a new Network connection by any name ( under Network connections Control panel )

3. Enter

                 Username = netone
                 Password = netone
                 Number to Dial = 172222

4. Now just press dial and hopefully you will be connected and you can surf Internet , the rates are

15 Rs. per hour during Daytime and 7.5 Rs. during 11Am to 7Am Night time

This is the actual cost you will be charged, nothing extra and it would be there in your BSNL bill at the end of the month .

Have fun with this trick and keep it as it will definitely save your face many times, when you need internet connection badly and nothing’s around ( although mobile GPRS is doing the trick for most of techies like me )
